Traditional Costumes
Traditional costumes are a precious expression of Slovenian heritage. They tell the story of the life, customs, and identity of our ancestors. Every age had its own attire, rich in symbolism, embroidery, and colors. Today, they are mostly seen during festive events, keeping the bond with our roots alive.
Children’s Costume
The simplest was the children’s costume. Babies wore long shirts with lace, and in the past were wrapped in a special cloth called puvelj. Boys and girls wore similar shirts until about the age of six, often with cloth slippers. When starting school, boys added black short trousers with a single strap.
Girls’ Costume
After confirmation, girls received their first true costume, the kitla or Lourdes costume. The wide white dress was paired with a petticoat, a white apron, and a light blue silk ribbon. Embroidered blouses and scarves added decoration, and a small bouquet of white flowers adorned the chest.
Boys’ Costume
Boys wore a white shirt, a red vest (lajbec), and a straw hat with ribbons in national colors. Some wore the light blue partner’s costume, with a yellow scarf and flowers on the hat.
Men’s Costume
Men wore black, brown, or blue suits with jackets adorned with many buttons and vests (jabc). A colorful silk scarf was tied under the collar of the linen shirt. On their head a hat or fur cap (frkindež), with woolen stockings and black shoes. Men also wore jewelry such as pocket watches and earrings.
Women’s Costume
The most elaborate was the mandrijarska costume. Colorful silk or wool skirts were paired with richly embroidered white blouses, silk aprons, and decorated shawls. A silk ribbon with a bow and the silk karpon shoulder covering with fringes were typical. Women wore lace head coverings (fčou) and a chest bouquet (pušeljc) of carnations, rosemary, and other flowers. Black shoes, white stockings, and gold jewelry completed the look.
There were also less common variations such as bovela and tabin, and in Istria, the special brška costume.
